Corona Virus 101

As we all know, coronavirus has now impacted our area with more cases in the metro Atlanta area daily and with school closings. Many of you all may be asking how this will affect my child.

Here are some facts we do know:
-COVID-19 is a new strain of virus that was first detected in China in December 2019.
-Because it is new, we do not know much about how this virus behaves and it’s potential impact. New information is becoming available daily.
-We do know that people above 60 years old and those with underlying medical conditions seem to have more severe disease.
-If children are affected, they tend to have milder disease.
-Symptoms are similar to flu, and may include fevers, cough and shortness of breath.

At this point, testing is not widely available. We DO NOT have the ability to test anyone in our office.

So, what should parents do:

1. If your child HAS had contact with someone with COVID-19 or has travelled outside of the US, and has mild symptoms as described above (fever and cough), do not go to your local ER or come to our office. Please call us or your local health department, for further guidance.
2. If your child HAS NOT had contact with anyone with COVID-19 and has not travelled outside the US, and they have symptoms of cough and fever. You may call our office and we will advise you if your child needs to be seen or if you can treat symptoms at home.

The best thing you can do for your family and to prevent spread of this virus is to WASH YOUR HANDS, for at least 20 seconds as often as possible.
